International Paper Company was founded in 1898, and with the requisition of the companies Union Camp (1999) and Champion International (2000), the world’s largest paper and forest products company wa formed.
International Paper’s worldwide headquarters is located in Memphis, Tennessee. The Company has operations in 40 countries on the Asian, European, and American continents and exports to over 120 countries.
The Company initiated its activities in Brazil in 1960, when it acquired shareholder control of Panamericana Têxtil.
The Company then undertook the search for the most suitable site to build a paper mill, which had to meet various factors of economic demand, manpower, supply of raw materials, and water, and transportation, including railways. Thus was selected the city of Mogi Guaçu, in the state of São Paulo.
The acquisition of Champion International Corp. by International Paper Co., on June 19, 2000, brought about the change of the trademark “Champion Papel e Celulose Ltda” to “International Paper do Brasil Ltda,” in October of 2000.
International Paper is currently the global leader in the segment, with approximately 83,000 employees and annual net sales of more than US$25 billion.
On July 19, 2005, International Paper Co. announced a transformation focusing the Company on the portfolio of non-coated paper and packaging.
